The Turkey Creek Dam and Dike Conservancy plays a vital role in safeguarding the structures that manage lake water levels. Join us as we take you behind the scenes to explore the meticulous process of monitoring and maintaining these essential systems. Learn how we ensure precise water release to achieve the perfect balance for the environment and the surrounding community.
Gates in Action
Heavy rainfall calls for precise action to protect both our lake levels and the structures downstream. When the skies open up, we carefully manage water flow by releasing as much as possible while ensuring the safety of the Henry Street Bridge below. This delicate process relies on constant monitoring and a water level gauge that indicates how far above or below the mandated level we are. By using this gauge, we can accurately control the release to maintain balance and prioritize the safety of our community. Take a look at the pictures below to see the gates in action as well as the gauge we rely on!
Meet the Dam Master
Who releases the gates you might ask? That would be our dam master, Chad Jonsson with Syracuse Parks & Recreation. What exactly does a dam master do? Well, a dam master’s role requires technical expertise, and attention to detail as their main priority is protecting the community and environment. Here are some the responsibilities of a dam master:
- Water Flow Regulation – They control the release and storage of water, maintaining optimal levels for purposes such as irrigation, power generation, flood control, and supply to nearby areas.
- Monitoring and Maintenance – Dam masters inspect the dam’s structure, equipment, and systems regularly to identify and address issues like wear and tear, leaks, or potential hazards.
- Safety Protocols – Ensuring safety measures are in place and followed, including disaster response plans in case of emergencies like floods or earthquakes.
- Environmental Management – Collaborating with environmental specialists to protect local ecosystems affected by dam operations.
