Map of Lake Wawasee, Syracuse Lake, and Lake Papakeechie

Nestled in the heart of Indiana, Lake Wawasee is a paradise for nature enthusiasts, vacationers, and residents alike. Lake Wawasee, Syracuse Lake and Lake Papakeechie offer over 3,500 acres of beautiful water. Together, these lakes provide year-round recreational activities, supporting a lively and thriving local community.

Rich History of Lake Wawasee

Lake Wawasee’s intriguing past stretches back to the early 1830s when settlers first arrived, drawn by the area’s abundant hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities. Originally named “Turkey Lake,” the lakes were later renamed to honor Native American chiefs Wawasee and Papakeecha, ensuring their legacies live on.

Established in 1837, the town of Syracuse flourished due to the resources provided by Lake Wawasee and the neighboring lakes. By the 1920s, Syracuse had become known as a cherished resort town, welcoming visitors seeking tranquility, adventure, and community spirit. Today, Lake Wawasee remains central to Syracuse, continuing its tradition as a vibrant community hub.

What is a Conservancy District?

A conservancy district plays an essential role in managing local water resources. Established through a circuit court process, this special taxing district allows landowners to effectively tackle issues like water management. Lake Wawasee and Syracuse Lake, spanning 3,410 acres and 414 acres respectively, are central to our conservancy district, which covers a total drainage area of nearly 25,000 acres.

Officially formed on December 15, 2020, under the Indiana Conservancy Act, our district safeguards the lakes’ natural beauty and resources for future generations.
