Autumn is a lively season around our lakes, with many animals becoming more active as they prepare for winter. Here are some of the animals you might spot around our lakes during the fall:

  • Migratory birds such as flocks of ducks and geese that are migrating, making stops at our lakes to rest and feed.
  • You will spot several different kinds of mammals like male deer or bucks and raccoons preparing for winter by foraging for food.
  • A variety of different reptiles and amphibians like turtles, frogs, and toads are all preparing for hibernation.
  • Finally, and possibly most importantly, are fish. Specifically, trout and bass, who become more active as they prepare for the colder months by feeding more aggressively.

Speaking of fish, below are some fishing tips and tricks as the weather and lakes get colder.

  1. Gear Up: Wear warm, moisture-wicking layers to stay comfortable in colder weather. Waterproof and insulated boots will also be helpful to keep your feet warm and dry.
  2. Choose the Right Time and Place: Fish are more active during the warmer parts of the day, usually between late morning and early afternoon. Fish tend to move to deeper, warmer waters as temperatures drop. Be sure to also look for sunny spots where the sun heats the water more quickly, such as the northern sides of our lakes.
  3. Pay Attention to Weather Patterns: Fish are more likely to bite during periods of stable weather. Also, fishing right before a cold front can be very productive, as fish sense the pressure change and feed more actively.
