We are entering our Fall blog series as the beautiful autumn colors emerge here in Indiana. Our first entry is about seiches and how they affect our very own Lake Wawasee, Lake Syracuse, and Lake Papakeechie. As local property owners and community members, it’s important to understand how seiches impact our shoreline and recreational activities.

What is a Seiche?

A seiche, in simple terms, is the act of water sloshing back and forth. Seiches can occur in a body of water as small as a swimming pool, bathtub, or even a cup of water. On a larger scale, they occur in bays and lakes, like our very own Wawasee. Typically, seiches are caused by strong winds and rapid changes in atmospheric pressure pushing water from one end of a body of water to the other. This sloshing action erodes with the moving water.

Effects of Seiches on Our Lakes

So, how can seiches affect our lakes? Well, seiches can disrupt our lake water gauge by causing rapid changes in water levels. As the water sloshes back and forth, it can cause the readings to fluctuate, which makes it difficult to get an accurate reading of the water level. If the seiche is intense, it can even damage the equipment. It’s like trying to measure the height of a trampoline while someone is jumping on it. The seiches also cause real damage over time such as shoreline erosion, dock wear, sometimes banging boats at harbor – especially in the winter when ice is involved. Consider taking proactive measures like spraying penetrating lubricant in cables to keep them strong and dry.
